Tips For Beginner Runners

I’m not trying to scare you off, but the hardest part about getting into running is getting into running. Starting out is tiring, and painful, but most important, rewarding. There is no feeling like crossing the finish line of your first 5K. The painful part however, is getting there. That is why I decided to share some useful tips to dull the pain a bit.

Invest In Good Quality Running Shoes

I cannot stress this enough. I have seen too many beginning runners (usually my high school colleagues) who throw on their three-year-old Vans and hit the road. This will only lead to injury. If you are serious about running, please do yourself a favor and go to a running store, do their stability test, and invest in the right shoes for your feet.

Start Slow And Build Up

If you are new to running or haven’t ran for a while, it’s a good idea to ease into it. When you start out, don’t expect to run 5 miles on your very first run. This too will cause injury since your body wont be used to the stress of running. I suggest following a running program tailored to your training age (there are thousands on the web).

Set Some Goals

This is the best way to stay motivated. Without goals, it’s too easy to get bored with running and eventually you’ll realize that you’re no longer running. Just make sure that the goal is realistic. Something simple like: run 10 miles this week, or run a 25:00 5K.

Fix Your Diet

As I have mentioned in numerous posts, a good diet is equally as important as a good training plan. You simply can’t have one without the other to become a good runner. The purpose of running is not just so you can eat your McDonald’s guilt free. If you don’t know what a good diet looks like, check out my post: What Should Runners Eat?
